Wheels for Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS)

Automated storage and retrieval systems, also known as ASRS or AS/RS is computer-controlled automation technology designed for warehouses to store, buffer and retrieve products on demand from specific storage locations. ASRS is fast, accurate, continuous and reliable, making the adoption of the technology a cost-efficient investment to large scale warehousing.

AS/RS can replace large areas of racking which saves floor space and increase productivity.  Automated storage and retrieval systems comprise of: the storage rack, input/output system, storage and retrieval (S/R) equipment, and the computer management system. ASRS reduces the time and manpower needed to retrieve and store items. The compact, efficient design allows for high volume loads to be moved quickly and accurately. The computer and robot-aided systems store or retrieve items from predefined locations. The S/R equipment follows established routes to the locations. 

Types of Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems

There are two main categories of AS/RS; Unit-Load ASRS and Mini-Load ASRS taking the form of:

• Unit-Load ASRS Fixed-Aisle designed for retrieval or storage along one path or aisle.
• Unit-Load ASRS Moveable Aisle Cranes designed to retrieve or store items in multiple areas
• Mini-Load ASRS Cranes designed to retrieve or store lightweight loads such as trays or cartons
• Mini-Load ASRS Shuttles designed to run along a track and deliver items or move them between racking systems.
• Vertical, Horizontal, and Robotic Carousels (used for lightweight storage/retrieval)
• Vertical Lift Module (VLM) ASRS
• Micro-Load
