Nissan were producing forklift trucks from 1957 at their Totsuka Plant in Japan and quickly became established as a leading provider of high performance material handling equipment. By 1965, under the company Shinnikkokukogyo Co. Ltd. Nissan was manufacturing forklifts for the U.S. market.

By 1988 Barret Industrial Trucks joined the Nissan Forklift group and manufacturing in the US began. As part of the Nissan group, their forklift division was able to benefit from the advanced technologies derived from automotive industry.

Just a year later in 1989 Nissan expanded its forklift business into Spain with the establishment of Nissan Motor Ibercia S.A, this eventually became Nissan Forklift Espana S.A. To combine manufacturing with the sales divisions in North America, Nissan Forklift Corp. was formed in 1993.  The Nissan brand continued to grow and in 2000 Nissan announced an alliance with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries., and two years later opened Nissan Forklift in Shanghai, China.

By 2007, to meet growing demand, Nissan bought Swedish manufactuer Atlet AB forklifts which became a production facility for Nissan. Then in 2012 Nissan Forklift joined UniCarriers group in 2012 and finally transitioned from Nissan Forklift to UniCarriers by 2015. Two years later Mitsubishi Logisnext  is created and becomes the provider of UniCarriers products.

The Nissan range of forklift trucks has grown to include  1.5 to 3.5 ton electric forklifts to respond to the diversified requirements from the customers.
